Natyashastra ka 28th Adhyaya (Swaradhyaya) Sanskrit with Hindi Commentary

From the viewpoint of musicology, serious study of Bharata Natya Shastra actually began after 1650 and when the fourth volume of Natya Shastra including Abhinav Bharati was published from Baroda in 1664-65, this study got a special impetus. The 28th chapter of Natyashastra is the proponent of Swara-Vidhi. The three components of Gandhavam are Swara, Taal and Pad, out of which Swara is not only the first but also the main one. Therefore, Swara-Vidhi is like the foundation of the entire musicology, and its importance for the student of music is undisputed. Even though the language is simple, due to the intricacy of the subject, the study of Natyashastra is extremely difficult without the help of any explanation. The text of the only explanation available in the form of Abhinav-Bharati is fragmented and corrupt, due to which the help of that explanation is beyond the reach of a common student. Therefore, the need for a new interpretation of the original text is unanimously agreed. Acharya Brihaspati has fulfilled this great need by presenting an independent Sanskrit commentary and Hindi commentary of the 28th chapter. The study of the original texts is still in its infancy in the field of musicology. Almost twenty years ago, a foreign scholar had written that this child has not even been fed his first meal yet.
