The story of Nala is very popular throught India. Tradition has accorded to it, more or less, a religious sancatity and it is widely believed that a recapitulation of the tale destroys sin and ill luck. Mallinatha the famous commentators has highlighted the traditional sanctity of the story quoting Mahabharatak, which according to his samys that the story of Karkotaka the serpent, princess Damayanti, king Nala and king Rituparna is sure to do away with the evil effects of Kali.
